It’s the new Speed Racer game, and it’s coming out this month—and we have the information that you want to know long before anyone else.

Speed Racer: The Beginning is all about the original Speed Racer cartoon. So much so, that according to a recent press release that announced the launch of this game on all iSO powered devices in April (2012), the game will actually feature real clips from original episodes for gamers to enjoy in between races. In the game, gamers get to control the Mach 5 supercar, and all of its dashboard, James Bond-inspired functions. Power-ups are a big part of this side scrolling and beautifully rendered racer. Before and after races, gamers can beef up their Mach 5 with things like speed boosts, more lives, better tires, and so on. Think back with us… way back to the mid-80s. Because in 1985, Nintendo would release one of the best car games ever to be created: Ecitebike. You were tasked with using a directional pad and the “A” and “B” buttons to maneuver your biker around obstacle prone tracks without falling off the bike. Fall too many times, and you lost the race.

CPU + Player: If you really wanted to make things more challenging, you could choose to race against the CPU. You had to tread carefully, however. One bump from the CPU would send your biker hurtling into a wall, or head over heels onto the track.

Design Mode: The coolest part about this game (at least what we loved the most) was that it offered the world’s very first custom track designer, something that is still mimicked in the best car games of today. In design mode, you could create custom tracks to race your bikes on. Easily, this was one of the top reasons to own this game, and also to own an NES at the time.
